Full-time, 12 Month, Exempt - Staff
Key School seeks an experienced Controller to lead all accounting, financial reporting, audit and compliance for the school. The Controller will oversee daily operations such as A/P, A/R, general ledger and bank reconciliations while also supporting budgeting, grant management and audits, and ensuring adherence to GAAP, IRS, and other regulations for strategic financial health. Key responsibilities include hands-on bookkeeping, month-end close, generating financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet), analyzing and explaining variances, managing internal controls and best practices, leading the financial and 403(b) audits, and preparing the Form 990. The Controller reports to the Director of Finance and Operations and supervises the AP/AR Manager.
Essential Responsibilities:
Leads and manages all aspects of the general ledger, financial reporting, audit and accounting compliance.
Reconciles monthly bank statements to the general ledger.
On a quarterly basis, analyzes and justifies any general ledger discrepancies.
Reconciles the general ledger and the Advancement Annual Giving, Restricted and Endowment sub ledgers on a monthly basis, in conjunction with Advancement.
Reconciles the endowment and investments to the general ledger on a quarterly basis, recording any dividends, gains or losses.
Prepares and analyzes monthly financial statements.
Prepares and disseminates monthly departmental and divisional budget reports and answers questions from administrators and department heads concerning their budgets.
Tracks capital acquisitions and posts assets to the general ledger, calculates monthly depreciation.
Prepares, manages and is responsible for all aspects of the financial audit. Responds to the audit team by answering questions and requests for additional information.
Supports the 403(b) audit team by preparing employee files for audit review and requesting reports from third party administrators.
Completes the annual Form 990 schedule of work papers and responds to questions.
Manages and supports the Accounts Receivable/Accounts Payable Manager in their work.
Works closely with the Director of Human Resources and the Director of Finance and Operations regarding payroll and benefit management.
Works closely with the Director of Human Resources and the Director of Finance and Operations to support all periodic surveys and mandated requests for information.
Prepares and files personal property tax, charitable organization registration form and any other necessary compliance filings.
Reconciles the bi-weekly and monthly payrolls to the general ledger.
Prepares the monthly 403(b) retirement report and reconciles it to the payroll register.
Supports the hiring, training and review of accounting and payroll personnel.
Assists with other special projects and assigned duties as requested by the Director of Finance and Operations.
Requirements
Required Skills/Competencies:
CPA or MBA required with three to five years in nonprofit accounting experience, including managerial or leadership experience, with a particular interest in independent school expertise
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to learn and teach others as necessary
Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate

Proficient with Blackbaud, Paycom, Microsoft Office and Google Suite

Compensation/Benefits:
Key School offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental and vision insurance, a generous 403(b) Plan, 10 Vacation Days, 10 Sick Days, 3 Personal Days, and much more.
The salary range for this position is $110,000-120,000 and is based upon several factors that include, but not limited to the candidate’s years of work experience, education and skills. There are additional opportunities on campus for coaching and various stipends as well.
