Montana State University Billings Foundation which was founded in 1968 as an independent, non-profit organization under IRS code 501(c)(3) is seeking a Controller who will direct the day-to-day accounting operations. This is a full-time/benefit eligible position and will report directly to the Vice President of Finance. This position will be responsible for supplying management with any and all finance information necessary for making policy decisions. The Controller will oversee accounting operations inclusive of budgeting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, payroll, and timely payment of all taxes, leasehold or contractual obligations. Controller will work jointly with the VP of Finance as technological advances to database management system are identified, will serve as a liaison to procuring IT equipment and maintaining software updates/licensing as needed.

Ideal Candidate:
Applicant must have a bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting, and/or its equivalent. Preference will be given to a candidate who has a valid Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant or MBA designation. Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.  The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate previous Controller level or equivalent business experience and be capable of working with minimal supervision.  Additionally, candidate would desire future growth and succession plan transition into VP of Finance role.  

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.
  • Recommends benchmarks that will be used to measure the company’s performance.
  • Produces the annual budget and forecasts; reports significant budget differences to management.
  • Provides financial analysis, with emphasis on A/P and A/R functions, capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Works with external auditors and provides needed information for the annual audit.
  • Oversees and assumes responsibility for all invoicing and billing practices, accountable for account reconciliation and outsourced payroll.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements
  • Oversee and assume responsibility for gift entry into Raiser’s Edge database, as well as, ensures documentation to support each gift
  • Supervise the Prospect Management, Research and Database Coordinator position and completes annual evaluation.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.


Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration required.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years related experience required. Salary Range Open - DOE
  • CPA or CMA designation preferred.
  • Highly developed and comprehensive financial management skills – preferably in a mission-based nonprofit environment.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and auditing standards.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Federal and State financial laws/regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to synthesize complex or diverse information and accurately prepare statistical and narrative reports as requested by Management and Board of Trustees.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. Must be able to work well under pressure/deadlines demonstrating commitment to complete work within established time parameters.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and decision making skills.
  • Ability to review and assess the operational and financial viability of new and existing contractual arrangements.
  • Familiarity with accounting and tax preparation software beneficial.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
